During the winter months, Big Sur awakens with drama and excitement. Waves grow into massive sculptures of blue in motion, casting white spindrift into the air and thundering against the shore. The ever-changing canvas of ocean becomes more alive and laden with artful expressions.

The skies have better clarity with cooler air, filled with inspiring clouds transitioning with passing storms. The Santa Lucia Mountains are green from rain, with new life bursting in the valleys, mountains and along the coast, creating a breathtaking spectacle of life.

ITINERARY - 3 Days

The expedition/workshop begins Friday, February 1st at 8:00 a.m. at the gallery and concludes end of the day Sunday, February 3rd. A specific daily schedule will be presented on our first day, and will be determined by local weather conditions.

For the true photography enthusiast, this is an essential time to be on the coast. Those seeking to be as safely close to the action as possible, to feel the grandeur of the meeting of mountains and sea at its most dramatic, then this is the expedition. Strategically positioned in the surf zone we work closely with the Pacific Ocean crafting images that represent the raw power and grace of the coastline. Walk through hidden riverbeds to discover secret waterfalls flanked by towering redwoods. Return at the end of the day with experiences and images you have only dreamed of.

This expedition is for those seeking to add exciting and intimate images to their portfolios. More advanced topics will be covered in this expedition, such as techniques for working in dynamic environments, HDR, time-lapse, and neutral density filter use for creative effects. This being an immersive workshop we will be departing early and returning late in the presence of superb conditions. This workshop is an exploration and for those wanting to take their photography to the next level. We are an intimate group of only ten participants on this four-day immersive expedition.

EXPEDITION/WORKSHOP NOTES

The instruction will be tailored to meet each individual's goals. As such, you will have an accomplished, professional photographer in the field guiding you throughout the expedition. We will be covering both artistic and technical aspects of photography during the workshop. Bring an "adventurous spirit," as we will maintain a patient and "never stop exploring" philosophy while in the field. We will be rewarded for this extra effort. Be prepared for a visual feast! In the early morning, we will journey into the field to explore, returning for lunch. In the afternoon, we return to the field once more for further explorations into the surrounding area. After sunset, we return you to your vehicle or accommodation in Carmel. Throughout the expedition, there will be plenty of time for answers to specific questions, portfolio reviews as well as personal attention.

LUNCH

Gourmet lunch is included and will be served at the finest local restaurants so that we may maximize our time together. A menu selection will be available ahead of time for you to select from. We will have water while on location and available throughout the day, but it is advised that you bring any additional snacks you will need during mid morning and afternoon.
